Tormek is offering three new diamond wheels and a new Multi Base, allowing you to get a FLAT bevel using the side of the Diamond Wheels using the new Multi Base!
Diamond VS CBN Wheels
Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) coated grinding wheels are commonly used for grinding tool steel and high speed steels using traditional bench grinders at rotational speeds of 1700 RPM and up. While diamond is about twice as hard as CBN, it is not heat tolerant and is easily damaged at temperatures higher than 700 degrees. At slower rotational speeds however diamond becomes the preferred abrasive, particularly for honing.
Diamond Meets Tormek
The new Tormek Diamond Wheels are truly the perfect match for Tormek T-8 machines. The low 90 RPM rotational speed of the Tormek T-8 is perfectly suited for diamond wheel grinding. While these new wheels can be used dry, we recommend using them with the T-8 water trough as it keeps the wheel clean of swarf and adds the extra cooling effect of water. Use ACC-150 Anti-corrosion water additive to the trough to prevent wheel deterioration.
Here is the information from Tormek:
We are now launching three new diamond wheels and a Multi Base for edge tool sharpening. Both the Multi Base and Diamond Wheels are designed for use with the Tormek Water Cooled Sharpening System and will give woodworkers the perfect conditions for always having sharp tools in their work.
The new diamond wheels offer an exceptional durability plus the ability to sharpen on the side as well as the periphery. The new Multi Base allows sharpening on the side of the diamond wheels and will leave a completely flat bevel that is preferred in some applications.
Håkan Persson, the Tormek CEO states: “We are proud to now offer our users the opportunity to sharpen with diamond, the world’s hardest material. Tormek’s low speed sharpening makes it ideal to use diamond for edge tool sharpening since no heat occurs. We believe that the diamond wheels together with the new Multi Base will make sharpening even easier for many of our dedicated Tormek users.”
The new diamond wheels come in three different grades; Coarse, Fine and Extra Fine. The quality of the diamond surface provides a high and constant sharpening ability and a grinding wheel that always remains the full size in diameter. Users who frequently sharpen the same tool will benefit greatly from this feature as it simplifies both setting and sharpening.
Diamond is the world's hardest material and almost twice as hard as cubic boron nitride (CBN), which is another commonly used abrasive. The diamond's extreme hardness and durability make it the optimal material for sharpening.
Another great aspect of the diamond wheels is that the wheels have a diamond layer on the side, perfect for the sharpening of small carving tools such as carving gouges and V-tools plus plane irons, wood chisels and knives. The result is a bevel edge with a completely flat surface, instead of a hollow grind.
When sharpening on the side of the Diamond Wheels using the new Multi Base MB-100, the user always has support and control using the Tormek jigs. To sharpen either with or without water is another detail which has been made possible with the new diamond wheels. However, Tormek always recommends sharpening with water as it prolongs the life of the wheel and gives a better result.
The Diamond Wheels are complementary to our water cooled sharpening system and will not replace the Tormek Original Grindstone. Each of the Tormek Diamond Wheels is suitable for all types of material, incl. steel, ceramic and carbide.
